Artist Statement
Immersed in wilderness, I have learned to appreciate the intimate changes of color, form and light in the distant mountains and misty rivers of America’s North and West. As elaborate travel plans changed through 2020, I began taking long walks in the town I have lived in and raised a family for the past 38 years. On those daily journeys I noticed the same inspiring attributes could be enjoyed in our local urban landscape.
These seven works serve as a historical account of the Howard Corridor into Southeast Evanston. I challenged myself to “re-imagine” the urban landscape forcing an aggressive 2-point perspective, choosing a “retro” inspired palette to block in the shapes and employing turn-of the century glazing techniques to draw out the sense of warmth and shadow. Artist Bio
Mark Cleveland is a contemporary visual artist working in oil, pen & ink and stained glass. Inspired by the work of the American masters of the early 1900’s, landscapes and portraits combine a saturated pallet and sensitive treatment of light rendered in Oil following Plein Aire tradition. While predominately a painter and illustrator, he is also an accomplished stained glassier which heavily influences the way he seeks out the spiritual element of light in all mediums.
As a young man he was adopted by a Native American spiritual elder who encouraged him to explore that part of his heritage. This passionate and rich journey led to decades of service to the Native American Community, an intimate immersion in wilderness and indigenous culture. An avid fly fisherman, he began his career by contributing detailed illustrations to outdoor fishing magazines. He attended classes at the “American Academy of Art” where he focused on use of color and composition. This foundation continues to influence his work as an accomplished artist .
