On exhibit in the gallery windows, Sugar Creek Folks by artist Jevoid Simmons. The prints of paintings are part of Simmons’ upcoming book, Up from down Home: A Family’s Journey North. The paintings were executed over a seven-year period with the last one completed in 2015, illustrating the extraordinary hardships and the life and death struggle faced by Black folks living in the South under Jim Crow.
In addition to painting, Simmons is a woodcarver and storyteller. His carvings are ongoing and capture family, friends, acquaintances and other characters from the past. The carvings are a part of a collection called Sugar Creek Folks.
Linda Summerfield and Evanston Made are partnering to raise funds for Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Legal Defense Initiative with a Mail Art Fundraiser! Mail Art from around the world will be on display in the windows at 1100 Florence Gallery and online, and sold for $50 each, all funds go to the cause. On display in the 1100 Florence Gallery windows, new works by Artist Angela Williams. The works will be on display thru July 3, all works are for sale, and can be viewed through the windows.

This series of works on paper reflect a historic moment in American history. The titles refer to the period during the post-Civil War Reconstruction: 13 Years, 3 months, 3 weeks, 2 days [2020] (reconstruct, reform, remake).
“I always knew I wanted to be an artist. Luckily for me, my loving and supportive mom was with me every step of the way. We spent many hours at the St. Louis Art Museum, art fairs and plays. Those memories fill my heart and keep me going—she inspired me to be a free spirit and follow my dreams. So, I did. I earned a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Visual Communications and continued to paint and explore.
